Human Settlements’ Portfolio Committee Chairperson visits Tambo Square in Gugulethu

The City of Cape Town’s Portfolio Committee Chairperson for Human Settlements, Councillor Albert Anda Ntsodo and City officials conducted an oversight visit to the Tambo Square informal settlement in Gugulethu where brand new street name signs were installed. 

'The oversight visit to the Tambo Square informal settlement is more than just having a look at the installation of road name signs and the progress being made in the area, but it is an opportunity to engage with residents about their concerns and needs.

'The new road signs will also improve the way residents receive their mail, letters and parcels and we are pleased that this project was completed on schedule. In recent months, the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee conducted a number of oversight visits in informal areas across the metro and we are continuing to see where improvements in delivery can be made in the most vulnerable areas. The City's Informal Settlements Department will facilitate and respond to a number of concerns and requests by the residents, including requests for wheelie bins, dealing encroachment matters, attending to storm water blockages and allocating ERF and home numbers. A number of City Departments will be involved and responsible in looking into the requests and we look forward to seeing the progress over the coming weeks.

'The Human Settlements Portfolio Committee will continue to engage with the Human Settlements Directorate and the Acting Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Alderman James Vos, to look at ways to assist residents who need it most,' said Councillor Ntsodo.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per South African legislation. The City's political office bearers do not have access to, or influence over the Register and its qualifying beneficiaries.
